First Photos of Melissa Benoist in Supergirl Costume!

It’s the movie costume! I didn’t expect that!

Supergirl First Costume Photo Headshot

I’m not sure why, but I didn’t expect them to recreate the movie costume so closely. I’m kind of delighted with that (I would have also loved shorts). The boots are longer, but otherwise they just did a really great job of updating the costume with modern fabrics that wouldn’t have been possible 30 years ago. The subdued navy blue and maroon hues will take a bit of getting used to, but the more I look at the mesh leotard and textured leather-like skirt and belt, the more the costume grows on me. My only quibble is that the over-the-knee boots look uncomfortable. The leather S-shield looks amazing. Yes, it’s missing the traditional yellow background, but I think it works. The cape length is perfect, the skirt length is perfect, even the usually troublesome neckline is perfect.

Like the first look photo of the Flash costume, this photo is really dark and doesn’t show off the costume to its best advantage. The boots are barely visible. But beneath the dark filter, the quality of the materials looks excellent. I can’t wait to see a better photo so we can see what it really looks like.

This costume is miles ahead of what’s being done in the DC movieverse. Maybe because the costumes are designed for actors who will have to wear them hours a day for years? I remember how many tries it took the Lois & Clark crew to get Superman’s costume just looking passable, so I am really impressed with how good this looks right out of the gate. It’s kind of amazing how far costume designers have come in creating superhero costumes. The Man of Steel producers should seriously consider hiring Colleen Atwood to redesign Superman’s costume for the next film.
