Supergirl in the Bronze Age

The departure of longtime Superman supervising editor Mort Weisinger in 1970 marked the end of the Silver Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age of Krypton. The effects of the editorial change were immediately felt on Supergirl when the writing, pencilling and editorial duties were all taken over by Mike Sekowsky in Adventures Comics #397. This period featured bold new costumes and more experimental stories, leading to DC Comics launching the first Supergirl series in 1972. That series saw Supergirl graduate from college and age up a few years as she joined the working world (two years after the debut of the groundbreaking The Mary Tyler Moore Show).

After 10 issues Supergirl was cancelled and amalgamated with the long-running seeries Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane and Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen into the new 100-page Superman Family, which took its numbering from the longest-running series of the three, Jimmy Olsen. This series ran from 1974 to 1982 and became one of the best-selling books of the era along with Batman Family. At first the main leads of Jimmy, Lois and Supergirl rotated new stories each issue with reprints for the other characters. Starting in Superman Family #182, the series switched to publishing all-new material.

Superman Family was cancelled in 1982 and replaced by The Daring New Adventures of Supergirl which ran from Nov 1982 to Sep 1984. Lois Lane moved to Daring’s backup feature from issues #2-12. The series changed its title to simply Supergirl in the issue #13 and introduced a new costume to coincide with the Supergirl feature film that would be released the following summer. The final issue came out in the same month as the movie. DC originally planned to launch a new Supergirl series, but those plans were dropped when editorial decided that Kara would be killed off in the era-ending Crisis on Infinite Earths.
